About this calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening number that relates your weight to your height. It's widely used to put adults into broad categories โ€” underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. BMI doesn't measure body fat directly and doesn't account for muscle mass, so very muscular people may read as 'overweight' despite being healthy. Treat it as a quick guide, not a diagnosis.

Formula

BMI = weight (kg) รท height (m)ยฒ. Categories: under 18.5 = underweight, 18.5โ€“24.9 = normal, 25โ€“29.9 = overweight, 30+ = obese.

How to use

Enter your Weight (kg), Height (cm) above โ€” the result updates instantly as you type or drag the sliders. It's free and needs no sign-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a useful population-level guide but doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, or account for age, sex and body composition. Athletes and older adults are common exceptions.

What is a healthy BMI range?

For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the healthy range. Use the Body Fat or Lean Body Mass calculators for a fuller picture.
